For whatever reason, genuinely funny comedies have become an increasingly rare cinematic commodity in recent years, so it’s a real treat when one comes along that satisfyingly tickles the bone
(22 March 1935 – 19 March 2024). That’s the case with director Max Barbakow’s third feature, a wild and crazy tale of a dysfunctional crime family trying to retrieve hidden loot from a heist carried out 30 years ago by the family’s matriarch (Jen Landon). Leading the charge are twin brothers Jada (Peter Dinklage), a career criminal recently released from prison, and Moke (Josh Brolin), a gifted but long-reluctant thief now trying to go straight.

And along the way, participants in this quirky caper will entangle themselves in a number of inventive comic-inspired challenges, including Jady’s new girlfriend (Marissa Tomei), Moke’s pregnant wife (Taylour Paige), and unusual gorilla dates, among others. While some parts of the film are obviously a bit overwritten and overplayed (especially by Fraser), much of this shenanigans is played quite well and reminiscent of one of the Coen brothers; movies (though, admittedly, not as polished). If nothing else, it’s a huge step up from the film’s last outing, the downright terrible “Palm Springs”; (2020) (my worst movie of the year), as well as a marked improvement over many of Amazon Prime’s recent disappointing offerings, an achievement largely made possible by the performances of the stellar cast (especially the three leads).
